Addressing network and storage interoperability management challenges
Increasingly, telecommunication providers are under pressure to reduce network related operating costs. Superna’s product suite is designed to help service providers, equipment manufacturers and enterprises save both time and money by providing tools to significantly improve storage wide area network interoperability and the response to network events—faster and with better information.
SupernaNET is a suite of advanced network analytic, mediation and security products. Traditionally the complexity, time, domain knowledge and cost needed to integrate mission critical optical networks with storage and resource management system have been prohibitive.
The SupernaNET architecture is shown in the following diagram. The entire product family is web-based with function specific portlets. Basic services are provided via the SupernaNET framework to each of the portlets. A key advantage of SupernaNET is that it provides heterogeneous mediation to optical, storage and fiber channel switching fabrics. The intent is to provide intelligence that can help with Event Correlation and Analysis (ECA) of the entire end-to-end storage to network environment.
A specific focus is on the discovery of optical network devices and their connectivity with storage devices and fabrics. This allows SupernaNET to gain visibility of network alarms and events across storage and optical network domains.
The portlets are based on current software architecture that includes a comprehensive web services model, uniquely integrated with geospatial technology to add advanced mapping functionality and spatial analysis to the overall system. In addition, SupernaNET is completely integrated with standard web-based mapping technologies such as Google Maps and Bing, which provides extended spatial analysis support functions. This approach allows for the rapid development of new applications into the SupernaNET framework.

Autodesk MapGuide integrated into SupernaNET Discover module for alarm and event monitoring (click image to enlarge)
The Discover module collects data and provides an advanced root-cause correlation capability to resolve network issues, including interoperability for optical and storage area networks. The Discover web-based user interface can be integrated with EMC Ionix (previously SMARTS) or other element management systems (EMS) or network management systems (NMS). Discover includes network device mediation software that provides real-time interface conversion, normalization, fault correlation, pre-processing
The Planner module is a web- or API-based optical network planning tool used to engineer networks in a set of simple steps:
- Power balancing per wavelength
- DCM(dispersion compensation module) and amplifier placement on networks (ring, linear, mesh), optimized for network reach
- Project export to PDF or Excel for Bill of Materials generation
Planner can be run standalone or integrated with other network link-budget engineering tools.
Cloud Simulator is a virtual appliance that simulates large-scale networks. It provides a cost-effective means of planning and testing network modifications before implementation.
Secure provides flexible key management solutions for optical and packet encryption devices. Network security management and monitoring tasks can be split between the enterprise and the service provider in a variety of ways. Enterprises can retain control of their encryption keys while service providers offer encryption as a service.
